Thank you for taking a moment to learn about the inspiration behind Dollar Dame.
My name is Asahal and my interest in money started at the age of eleven as I wanted to buy a bicycle so I begged my mother to visit a bank where I opened my first savings account. My job earnings as a newspaper girl had a home to grow for the bicycle purchase.
Then as a teen, I grew into learning about GICs (guaranteed investment certificates), moving on to mutual funds and stocks in my twenties.
Growing up I was always told to get an education - this was the way out of poverty and living paycheck to paycheck. After highschool, I went straight into post secondary, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration program in four years. This business program offered the traditional speciality pillars of where you wanted to focus on learning and this is where I learned that I could have a career in helping people with their finances.
I earned my degree in 1999 and moved to Japan for work and most importantly to learn more about the culture and language. I spent three transformative years in Japan, where I learned to embrace different perspectives and approaches which was an invaluable experience living abroad.
Eventually, I returned to Canada, driven by a desire to reconnect with family and to start my career.
Over the next decade, I worked in the investment industry and studied for three more years —earning licenses in securities, options, and insurance. This allowed me to have all the tools to help clients build their investment portfolios without limitations - stocks, bonds, and options to hedge against risks, along with insurance solutions.
I started to realize that the traditional corporate environment wasn’t the right fit for me.
In 2012, I decided to help people with their personal finances in a welcoming space that offers a holistic approach to wealth.
At Dollar Dame, I focus on listening, supporting, and teaching strategies to manage money with simplicity.
Looking back, my early drive to save was all about achieving financial security.
Today, my mission is to help others feel safe about their financial future and so they can have options.
This is the story behind Dollar Dame and a glimpse into who I am. I invite you to schedule a free, no-obligation call so we can start your financial wellness journey together—and I promise you’ll be glad you did.
