Money is Evil

My grandmother on my mother’s side was a strong believer in that money was evil.

She worked her whole life and had very little even though she worked hard and honestly for her money.

I understand completely where this belief came from, as she was a strong Chilcotin Aboriginal woman and devout Catholic.

Aboriginal people culturally would exchange and share goods within the community.  No one would have more than they needed to live. This was believed so strongly that the leadership (Chief and Council) would have giveaways of items they accumulated.  The goods (wealth) were shared and not just of use for one or a few families to live extravagantly. But for all to enjoy.

Many religions also teach to help the less fortunate.

Becoming a young adult, I gave more thought on this belief, shared with me by my beloved grandmother, who wanted the best for me.

Was it possible that this belief placed deep within me, could be an obstacle from achieving financial stability and comfort in my life?

Rather than the above negative belief…I have changed it to…

Money is neutral and a resource to do good (in my life and the world around me)

I like to think of money as just a medium of exchange used, making it easier for one to exchange for things of value.

If you make a good amount of money then it is because you provide a lot of value in the world. You must be providing goods or services that the world values.

Don’t get me wrong, humans have and still, unethically obtain and accumulate money, so I understand why many would see that those who have wealth could be evil if they exploited people and the planet due to greed.

Remember it’s not the money that is evil, it’s the choice of the holder of money that has the ultimate control on where their money goes; to live simply and modestly.

Acquiring money can’t be the main purpose for one’s life but it be balanced so one is living a life with financial security and generosity.

My grandmother was one of the most generous humans I have ever known. I miss her.

Fill in the blank for your beliefs around money. Money is…
